Retrofit and extension of a 1930’s property to improve energy efficiency and create rear facing social space.

Swaledale Road

Location: Brincliffe, Sheffield

Sector: Residential

Status: Planning Approved

An existing rear conservatory created a barrier between the ground floor and the garden beyond - overheating in summer and freezing in winter.

The client wanted a better connection to the outside, a new kitchen, utility space and a separate wet entrance for the family dog. In addition, there was a requirement to improve the existing building fabric, upgrading the overall thermally qualities and introducing renewable energy in the form of solar panels and an air source heat pump.

A new wrap-around extension not only provides new service space and secondary entrance but allows much improved access between the existing hall and new rear space. A generous new kitchen with island seating and storage leads on to the open plan dining and snug. Carefully orchestrated rooflights and new openings to the garden allow in plentiful natural light whilst promoting flexible circulation.

Timber battens will clad the new extension and, along with green aluminium framed windows and doors, create a tactile, natural backdrop and playfully reference the client’s family links to forestry.

Cork render will be applied to exterior and interior walls, windows replaced, air tightness tape utilised and insulation introduced to roof and floors to vastly improve thermal performance.
