Playful adaptation and extension of a family home on a narrow garden plot.

Ringwood Road

Location: Walthamstow, London

Sector: Residential

Status: Planning Approved / Technical Design

The client needed an additional bedroom introducing to their ground floor flat, allowing a growing family to stay in the home they love.

The proposals relocate social space from the front to the back of the house, providing a bright and expansive kitchen, dining and living area leading onto the garden. A rear extension utilities the width of the plot and expands into the narrow side return, carefully restricting the building height against neighbouring properties to gain a tricky planning approval.

New facade openings connect the existing building to the L-shaped extension, creating a flowing social space with strong relationships to the garden and newly created mini courtyard. Elements of existing structure are retained to provide an interesting distinction between new and old, with a beautiful raked plywood ceiling providing an intriguing focal point.

This project is a fantastic example of how creative space planning can make a modest home feel generous and luxurious.
