A unique, sustainable new home, set within woodlands on the site of a former kitchen garden.

Fizmer - Paragraph 84 House

Location: Nottinghamshire / Yorkshire Border

Sector: Residential

Status: Planning

Proposals for a contemporary two storey family dwelling in a rural setting. Planning permission is being sought under Paragraph 84 of the National Planning Policy Framework - enabling exceptionally designed homes in isolated countryside settings.

Alongside extensive ecological and habitat regeneration of the wider landscape, the client’s desire is to create a profound piece of architecture, integrated into it’s natural surroundings. The home will be low-energy and low-carbon design, relying on renewable energy to aid self sufficiency.

The layout, distinctive forms and material palette are derived from the nearby listed buildings and historic use of the site as a kitchen garden. A ground floor datum is formed in vernacular red brickwork, whilst timber shingles clad and define the upper storeys, softening the built form against the backdrop of woodland. Flat sedum roofs enhance wildflower habitats whilst reducing overall height and promoting views to the tree canopy.

As well as a home, the client’s also wish to create a place of work - being involved in the creative world of photography. A separate studio building will contain a dark room and shooting space, providing professional flexibility against an inspirational backdrop.

To reflect the strong productive history of the site, a carefully curated landscaping scheme re-introduces intensive growing space and orchards. Terraces, pools and landscaped walls demark space and create moments where interactions and socialising can occur.
